Today, life moves so fast that moments have a tendency of passing us by. In all my work, I aim to capture these moments. To me there is no moment too small or too large, all are worth capturing. Some of my pieces are of things you may walk by and not notice, like a small flower on a cactus. Others are of scenes from my life that literally took my breath away.
Cactus Flower
The essence I wanted to capture in this piece is the juxtaposition of the cactus with the beautiful blooming flower.

Oasis
When I saw this scene in real life, it took my breath away. The majestic mountains looking over this desert oasis, it almost seemed unreal. I wanted this piece to have that same feeling - an oasis so beautiful that you question “is this real?”

Desert Flowers
When I think of this view, I think of warmth, beauty and peace. When people see this piece, I want them to feel that same inner calm. I want them to exhale out, relax and just take in the view.

Aspen Ski
Throughout my life, I have cross country skied. One of the greatest joys of skiing is that it takes you to place like this. You can be standing in the middle of the woods surrounded by only the sound of the wind in the trees and just be in awe of its majesty. In this piece, I captured one of these moments. I found titling it a Serenade to be fitting because in this moment I was only surrounded by cool air and a Serenade is a piece of music sung or played in the open air.

Sam’s Saw Mill
The Family farm often included extended family and teamwork. I wanted to capture the action and teamwork at the sawmill. This piece was completed in 1973. The colors are a bit raw in this early work but the painting captures the essence of my dad and a favorite uncle focusing on the work at hand. I can still hear the whine of the saw blade and the smell of saw dust.

The Walks Before Me
This bridge is one right near my house that I have walked more times then I can count. I remember teaching my children how to bike and guiding them over this bridge as they were so nervous and wobbly. I can look back and remember walking over this bridge in so many different times in life: new jobs, hardships, kids growing up, retirement, the list goes on. This bridge is a moment in time. When I look at this piece, I am rushed with old memories from so many walks before.

Red Woods
This painting was done for close friends who loved the peacefulness and strength of the Red Woods. I worked with a photo they had which lacked detail so the painting is a composite of a second photograph. Once I began it was obvious why they liked the scene and the blend of the two photos worked well. I wanted to capture the darkness of the redwood forest understory and the lush decomposition of the forest floor. It is important to be in your mind where you are painting. As I close my eyes I can smell the dampness of the moss and ferns.

Roosterfish
This personal favorite is a composite of two photos. Most often my work begins with sketches and the progressive images show how the painting came together. I wanted to capture the power of the ocean surf and the intensity of the human interaction. The crashing of the waves, the smell of the saltwater and the very real concern of being washed out to see all are part of this painting for me. Also, one roosterfish was caught! p.s..... never turn your back on the ocean.

The Walk to the Lake
I always enjoyed the peace and quiet of this walk through the red pine understory. The dappled sunlight seemed magical. The small greens in the foreground finally gave it the depth perspective I was after and then the magic of the filtered sunlight snapped into place.

Pastel Wall
While hiking Zion National Park a local photographer told us this was one of the best vistas in the park and I have to agree. Getting the colors right was key and after the painting was completed the title "Pastel Wall" just seems appropriate.
